Kindle update version 2.5.3

My Kindle DX just updated from version 2.5.2 to version 2.5.3. So far I can not tell any differences. Since the .bin file had only a size of about 57kbyte I guess it was just a minor bug fix. Will keep track of that

ASUS and Amazon team up

Today Amazon announced in a press release that, in the near future, Kindle software will come pre-installed on many ASUS models including the 1005PE line of Eee PC Netbooks and their UL Series of notebooks.

There is no doubt that preloaded software is not an entirely new concept. But the implied partnership strengthen rumors that the upcoming Eee Pad tablet device will be unveiled by the end of this month.
In spite of the shortcomings compared to an e-Ink display, these devices are useful as reading tools.

Thus, Amazon is simply following its strategy of countering Apple’s iPad and iBooks through ubiquity. Kindle Reader software is available for nearly every big OS or smartphone platform. So buyers are able to easily buy and read e-books on nearly any device. Since netbooks are the most obvious competitors for the iPad, getting Kindle on the Eee PC out-of-the-box makes a great deal of sense for both Amazon and Asus.

Kindle 2.5 Update

Different Kindle DX users report that the 2.5 software update is finally coming.
Amazon had set a target of late May for their 2.5 update, which enables PDF pan and zoom and improves library organization with collections.

A Facebook- and Twitter-friendly app that enables the user to share book excerpts. The other much demanded function is a password protection.

WePad is now WeTab

Neofonie, the German company manufacturing the Android tablet formerly known as WePad, has abruptly changed the device’s name to “WeTab”.

Despite rumors that Apple is the reason of this change, the company does not imply that they are behind this.

The official statement says:

“To clearly differentiate our products within the international market for tablet computers, as of today we have changed the product name of our tablet computer from WePad to WeTab. Similarly, the company formerly known as WePad GmbH will now trade under WeTab GmbH. This change only concerns the name of the product and company. All other particulars and pre-orders are not affected.”

So far, Apple seems not own the trademark for ‘pad’, but chief executive Steve Jobs has in the past already claimed that it is.

HP Slate dead?

Rumors say, that HP had stopped development of the Slate and killed off the project entirely. According to the rumors, HP isn’t thrilled with Windows 7’s performance on the tablet. Something I can not believe in, since netbook users know, that Win7 does perform well on low-end hardware.

The Slate was officially unveiled in January had a rumored price of $549, and was supposedly launching in June.

So far there isn’t an official statement from HP.

Police Seized Computers of Editor Jason Chen

Last Friday night, a Rapid Enforcement Allied Computer Team of California irrupted into the home of Jason Chen while he was not present. The police seized his four computers and two servers.

They where using a warrant by Judge of Superior Court of San Mateo.

Gaby Darbyshire, COO of Gawker Media LLC, claimed the search warrant to remove these computers was invalid under section 1524(g) of the California Penal Code.

It is illegal to seize journalist’s computers, because they must not be forced to uncover their sources.

Jason Chen is an editor for gizmodo.com and recently reported about a lost and found iPhone 4 prototype.
